Perak: Ikan Kurau Homestay

Kuala Kurau is a small village in northwest Perak, easy to get to from Singapore if you fly into Penang and drive about an hour over the 2nd Bridge Link. I stayed at Ikan Kurau Homestay there in August 2017, for two nights, and it’s stuck with me since.

Quick lunch stop first: there’s a genuinely good hokkien mee spot near the Snake Temple in Penang worth timing your drive around.

Ikan Kurau Homestay — what a view
What a view — our two-night stay at Ikan Kurau Homestay.

The owner spent two years refurbishing the place, and it shows — it’s rustic without being rough, and clearly thought through room by room rather than just patched up. The living hall is the heart of it: a communal space packed with distinctive furniture and vintage odds and ends.

So much charm in the details — a real collection.

The detail I remember best is a wall covered in sketches, notes, and messages left by past guests — an open invitation to add your own mark before you leave. Small thing, but it’s the kind of detail that makes a homestay feel like more than a place to sleep.
