Penang, hokkien mee, and the snake temple

Penang trips have a way of becoming food trips whether you plan them that way or not. This one did.

Penang Snake Temple prawn hokkien mee
A RM5 prawn hokkien mee stall right in front of the Snake Temple, near Penang Airport — the default mix of yellow noodles and bee hoon, extra belacan on request.

Hokkien mee here is a different animal from the Singapore version — darker, richer, more shrimp-forward — and I went in expecting to just eat well. What I didn’t expect was ending up at a snake temple almost by accident, wandering off after lunch with no real plan.

Some of the best travel days are the ones with no itinerary.
